How do I get my preschooler evaluated for special education services?

Q: How do I begin the evaluation process if I suspect my preschooler needs special education services?

A: You may have concerns about your preschool age child's speech/language, or his cognitive, physical, social or behavioral development. The first step is a simple one. If you suspect your child displays developmental delays in any of these areas, you may want to contact your pediatrician or local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) and register your child for a preschool evaluation, which is at no out-of-pocket cost to families.  Upon receiving consent to evaluate your child from your school district, you will be able to choose any agency approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to perform the necessary preschool special education evaluations.  Once the school district Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) receives the completed reports, they will contact you to schedule a committeee meeting to discuss the evaluations and recommendations.  If your child is eligible for Early Intervention services, a multidisciplinary team will work together with you to tailor an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) that best serves the needs of your child.  Early intervention is key to academic success, so take the first step and be a pro-active parent if you suspect your preschool age child may have a developmental delay.
