Is It Normal to Have Adult Teeth Growing Behind My Child's Baby Teeth?

This is a very common concern among parents of 6-7 year olds. The lower adult central incisors can sometimes erupt lingual or behind the baby teeth and look like two rows of teeth, which can be very disconcerting to parents.

Rest assured that if the baby teeth are loose, there is likely no intervention necessary. What I tell kids (and their parents) is to keep wiggling those baby teeth several times per day, and they will fall out on their own. The adult teeth will then move into a normal position and will not be negatively affected.

If the baby teeth aren't mobile and wiggling them gets you nowhere, it is possible that the baby teeth will have to be extracted, but it will be a very routine and simple extraction.
