STEM Alliance Receives Funding to Support Digital Equity Now

STEM Alliance Receives Funding to Support Digital Equity Now

Digital Equity Now provides a device, a hot spot WiFi package, and fifteen hours of tech education to low income residents in Westchester County.

There are 30,000 households in Westchester that have no computer and over 51,000 without internet, and the move to remote learning made the digital divide even more apparent. The STEM Alliance will be receiving $22,500 from Westchester County to support Digital Equity Now—an initiative that aims to bridge the digital divide by providing a device, a hot spot WiFi package, and fifteen hours of tech education to low income residents in Westchester County. This grant furthers the County's commitment to helping low income Westchester residents gain equal access to technology and broadband in our increasingly digital world.

County legislator Catherine Parker said: "We’re so pleased to add this work to the County budget because we have seen the success of the STEM Alliance’s program since the start of the pandemic.  There is such a significant benefit to our County to support the growth of this work."

The STEM Alliance's Digital Equity Now program focuses on providing devices to families in need and tech education to use those devices. Thanks to the funds from Westchester County, the initiative will be able to reach even more clients. In order to reach and imapct as many community members as possible, outreach will be done through partner organizations across Westchester including Catholic Charities, the Carver Center, Westchester Jewish Community Center, and Community Resource Center.

“We provide a digital skills curriculum, the devices and the teacher training, while our partners provide an educator at their site, participant enrollment and on-going support for their specific community members," says VP of Programs at the STEM Alliance, Antonella Kauffman.

The STEM Alliance aims to serve 650 clients this year and to serve as many as 2,500 by the year 2024.
