Our World Neighborhood Charter School Opens Howard Beach Location

Our World Neighborhood Charter School Opens Howard Beach Location

Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools, based in Astoria, recently opened a Howard Beach location. The school opened its doors on August 29 for grades K-2 in a brand new, 42,000-square foot building with 18 classrooms-all with smartboards- and eight specialized classrooms. A rooftop play area is currently being built.

The school is located in a part of town inland that does not have charter schools. Students follow a curriculum that is similar to that at the Astoria location, including themes that change each month,  known by the school as Pillars of a Positive Community. These include kindness, friendship and respect. By discussing and modeling these traits, teachers work to create a learning community where students can develop what they need for future success.

The school also teaches Spanish to kindergarteners and offers an integrated study of world culture. Arts and music is also part of the curriculum.

According to Mark Crusante, director of external relations, the school plans to open its doors up to grade 5 next year. Enrollment for grades K-2 is still open for this school year.

“It’s a great school,” Crusante said. "We are very much open to the community. We’re here to serve the District 27 school community.”

Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools opened in 2002. It works to provide a liberal arts education to prepare students to meet the challenges of high school.

More information about the school and enrollment is available on the Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools website.
