Your family can spend a few hours helping the community—either by volunteering or raising money—at these events this month.



Looking for ways to give back to the community by participating in fundraisers and volunteering in Rockland County? You’ve come to the right place! We found fundraising and volunteer opportunities in the area that your whole family can participate in. From helping to clean up parks to walking for a good cause to raising money for local nonprofits and more, you’ll find small, easy ways your family can do some good while having fun! 

And giving back to the community does more than help your neighbors. It helps your family too. In fact, kids should volunteer with their family because they’ll make new friends and connections that can lead to a job or career, gain important skills and experience that will help them later in life, see more of the community and world, build confidence and self-esteem, relieve stress, spend time doing what they care about, and feel like they’re part of a community, according to PBS Kids. 

Here’s how your family can help raise money and volunteer for various causes in Rockland County this month:

9th Annual Happy Jack 5K

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 16, 9am
WHERE: Germonds Park, Germonds Road, West Nyack, NY
AGES: All
WHAT:

The Happy Jack 5k is an annual, family friendly 5k walk/run that honors the life of John Thomas "Happy Jack" Doyle. All proceeds go to The Happy Jack Fund which provides annual scholarships to HS students who have lost a sister/brother as well as provide families with support who are suffering through the loss of a child. The race is is an officially timed out and back style race beginning and ending in Germonds Park. Traffic is controlled by the Clarkstown Police Department. Additionally, there will be a kid’s fun run for all ages prior to the 5k.

Shirts will be provided to the first 200 registered runners in the main race (kids race not included). All participants will receive a participation medal in both the kids race as well as the main event. Participants are encouraged to start teams. The top three teams with the best cumulative timed run with be awarded Trophy's. If you need help in setting up a team please contact [email protected] .

Paper Shredding and Non-Perishable Food Collection Event FREE

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 16, 8-11:30am
WHERE: Orangetown Town Hall, 26 Orangeburg Road, Orangeburg, NY

WHAT:

Help someone get ahead while you shred! Please bring a non-perishable food item for donation to local food pantries. Free secure drive-thru paper shredding. All events open to all Rockland County residents (no businesses or non-profits) First-come first-served basis until the trucks are full. No plastic bags,binders or other plastics. Paperclips and staples are acceptable.

Fall Fundraiser

Come out for a day of food, music, raffles and more to support the Suffern Little League and the Suffern Midget Mounties.
