Create Your Own Hamilton Song, Rap, or Poem with EduHam at Home

Create Your Own Hamilton Song, Rap, or Poem with EduHam at Home

With the absence of Broadway as a result of COVID-19, this new program allows families to immerse themselves in the Broadway show while learning about American history, using primary sources, and creative expression.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Hamilton announced the launch of EduHam at Home, a free digital program for students and their families to learn about America's founding era and create their own unique narratives through song, rap, spoken word, or scene. Students can submit these creations and selected performances will be shared on the Hamilton app, social media, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History's website for Hamilton fans everywhere to view. The program is recommended, but not limited to, students in sixth through twelfth grades and their families.

This online learning experience will give students the opportunity to follow in Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's footsteps and learn how he used primary sources to create the songs for the iconic Broadway show. It also provides an American history curriculum including people, events, and documents of the founding era.

Upon registering on the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History website, students can access a variety of exclusive content including:

  • Exclusive video clips from Hamilton
  • Interviews with Lin-Manual Miranda and other cast members
  • Primary sources centered on 45 people, 14 events, and 24 documents from the founding era
  • Advice for using these materials to create performance pieces

“Out of everything that has come from Hamilton, I am most proud of EduHam and of the students who have created their own incredible work from primary sources,” Miranda said in a press release. “I’m thrilled that we can make Hamilton learning a family experience, led by the students at home during this unprecedented time.”

EduHam at Home is part of the Hamilton Education Program, created in 2015 by Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller and Miranda.  The goal of the Hamilton Education Program is to integrate the study of American history with the performing arts.
